Lightning strike on train causes disruptions in Manila
This is the shocking moment lightning struck a train, causing service disruptions in Manila.
CCTV footage shows commuters walking on the platform as the sliding doors closed just before sparks erupted from the top of the locomotive at Antipolo Station on LRT Line 2 in the Philippine capital.
A blinding flash of light was followed by sparks flying over the passengers on August 5.
The incident prompted frantic commuters to quickly move away from the train.
No one was reportedly injured from the incident.
Police investigations revealed that lightning struck a cable on top of the train before arcing to the catenary power cable.
Light Rail Transit authorities assured the public that the train is equipped with safety features, including a lightning arrester.
Atty Hernando Cabrera said: 'What sparked was actually the surge protector, that is our lightning arrester. Its function is to catch lightning strikes.
'While we cannot prevent lightning, we can install arresters to protect our trains.'
It is common for trains to be struck by lightning during rainstorms in the area.
Train operations between Cubao Station and Recto Station were delayed for about an hour following the incident.
Meanwhile, LRT 2 deployed shuttle vans to assist affected passengers.
Local media reported that the train set affected by the lightning strike had been scheduled to be removed from platform one at the station after operations ended for the night.
Electric trains, such as those on the LRT, depend on overhead power lines and intricate electrical systems. Lightning arresters are used for safeguarding these systems and maintaining passenger safety during adverse weather conditions.
