123-year-old Buddhist stupa collapses due to continuous rainfall in Thailand
A Buddhist stupa that stood for more than 100 years has collapsed in Thailand.
The 123-year-old Phra That Non Tan temple crumbled in Nakhon Phanom province on Sunday, leaving it beyond repair.
The structure, made of traditional bricks and mortar, was often visited by worshippers praying for good fortune and prosperity. It is considered a historical landmark linked to the settling of the Thai Nyaw people in the district.
Authorities said structural cracks and prolonged heavy rainfall had caused the collapse before restoration work could begin.
Aerial footage shows the ruins of the stupa with just a section of the ordination hall left standing.
Recovered from the wreckage were a five-tiered brass spire and three bronze Buddha statues, possibly containing sacred objects.
Chinnawat Thongpreecha, Uthen district chief, said: 'Regarding the restoration plan, a new structure will be built to replace the original, replicating the original as closely as possible.
'The structure has collapsed due to deterioration over time, and the ancient construction lacks steel or other supporting structures.'
He added that the reconstruction will involve two parts, using the original debris to build a small stupa to be kept inside the temple. A replacement Phra That Non Tan will then be connected to the ordination hall that sustained only partial damage.
Officials said the reconstruction budget would reach more than 20 million baht (457,918 GBP).
