China: Enthusiasm for rock climbing hits new high in China
[Voiceover] Climbing gyms are summiting the list of fun activities in Beijing this summer. At one large indoor rock-climbing gym, participants on the ground shout messages of encouragement to people scaling the walls. The manager says they've seen an increase in the number of new climbers lately. [Soundbite] Chen Wenjie, rock climbing enthusiast: "I started climbing about two or three months ago and come here two or three times a week. Two years ago, I only had one friend who climbed, but now I have about a dozen friends who climb." [Soundbite] Wei Junjie, person in charge, Rockhour Climbing: "We currently receive around 1,300 to 1,500 visitors per week—a roughly 30% increase compared to the same period last year. With the growing popularity of rock climbing, we’ve seen a significant rise in bookings and inquiries. New customers are growing in number and now account for about 25 percent of our total foot traffic." [Voiceover] Outdoor climbing gyms are also becoming popular in the city. On this summer night, a gym located in Beijing's Olympic Forest Park is teeming with participants. [Soundbite] Yu Yiting, rock climbing enthusiast: "I feel that the atmosphere is quite pleasant, and the air is also very good and fresh. After climbing to the top, I could enjoy the view and watch the sunset, which makes me feel so happy." [Voiceover] Gyms in the city have their own rates and offers, but in at least one establishment, the price for a beginner climbing class, plus shoe and belt rentals, was around 28 U.S. dollars.
