[...] Imagine working under these conditions: a massive workload, extreme fatigue, and constant worry about your family—whether you’ve been able to get them food or clean drinking water—all while facing the possibility of receiving news that your house has been bombed. [...] Mistakes here can cause permanent disability or death. But with the fatigue, malnutrition, and the increasing number of cases, this puts a huge burden on our medical staff. [...] Unfortunately, in recent months—especially with the arrival of humanitarian aid—the workload has been relentless. Sometimes we work 24 hours straight, and some staff members refuse to rest out of a sense of duty. This has led to extreme exhaustion, forcing us to replace them even when staffing levels are critically low." 7. ABU KIRSH TREATING PATIENT/ MEDICAL TOOL 8. VARIOUS OF ANOTHER DOCTOR CONDUCTING EYE OPERATIONGAZA, PALESTINE - AUGUST 8: Despite ongoing starvation caused by Israel’s blockade and relentless airstrikes, doctors in the war-torn Gaza Strip are struggling to save lives while battling exhaustion and malnutrition. Many physicians have lost significant weight and now find it difficult even to stand, let alone provide quality medical care. Iyad Abu Kirsh, head of the anesthesia department at the Eye Hospital in Gaza City’s Nasser neighborhood, said the attacks have forced medical teams to work around the clock. “Imagine a constantly increasing workload with no breaks, and medical staff having only one modest meal a day,” he told Anadolu Agency. “This is far from enough to give us the energy and focus for such demanding work.” On top of extreme fatigue, Abu Kirsh said doctors also worry about their families — whether they have food, clean water, or even a safe home. Some return to find their houses destroyed. Because of their schedules, health workers often wake up early to search for food and water for their families before starting long shifts. “Mistakes here can cause permanent disability or death,” Abu Kirsh said. “But with the fatigue, malnutrition, and rising number of cases, this puts a huge burden on our medical staff.” The number of wounded has increased since the opening of what he called “so-called aid distribution points” controlled by the United States and Israel. “Sometimes we work 24 hours straight, and some refuse to leave for rest out of a sense of duty,” he said, adding that in some cases doctors have needed intravenous drips to keep going. Israel has been facing mounting outrage over its deadly war on Gaza, where more than 61,300 people have been killed since October 2023. The military campaign has devastated the enclave and brought it to the verge of famine. Last November, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza. Israel also faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice for its war on the enclave. Writing by Ayse Elif Erdis
