Resident squeezes between walls to save abandoned newborn baby
This is the dramatic moment a resident squeezes between walls to save an abandoned newborn baby in the Philippines.
Locals heard the cries of a baby in Cavite on Monday, August 4. When they went to check, they were shocked to find an infant with no clothes on in a canal, trapped between two walls.
A kindhearted young man made himself fit through a small square hole, originally meant for an exhaust fan, then carefully slipped into the narrow space between the concrete barriers to reach the baby.
Footage shows the rescuer emerging from the hole, slowly lowering himself and extending his left arm to retrieve the helpless newborn from the tight gap.
Residents can be heard erupting in cheers after the child was safely rescued, and the baby was immediately wrapped in a cloth to prevent hypothermia before being rushed to a nearby medical facility.
It is not known how the newborn ended up in the canal, but authorities later confirmed that a minor in the area had recently given birth.
Both the young mum and her baby are now in stable condition, and police are continuing the investigation.
In the Philippines, abandoning a minor under seven years of age is punishable by imprisonment of up to six months and a fine of 100,000 PHP (1,301 GBP). If the abandonment results in the death of the child, the penalty increases to imprisonment of up to six years.
