A newborn baby was rescued after being abandoned near a rubbish bin in Bangkok, Thailand.

The baby boy, believed to be just one or two days old, was found in an alley in the city on the morning of September 1.

A female university student who heard his cries coming from a garbage pile carried the infant back to her apartment.

Police arrived the following day and found the infant 'in strong and healthy condition', with his umbilical cord already cut.

Footage shows officers carrying the child, bundled up in blankets, to a children's hospital for a check-up.

Police Captain Patcharapol Klinjitto of the Phahonyothin Police Station said: 'Police are interviewing witnesses and reviewing security camera footage from the surrounding area to identify the mother who abandoned the newborn.'

The boy's parents may be prosecuted for abandonment under Thai Penal Code Section 306, which carries a penalty of up to three years in prison, a fine of up to 6,000 Baht (140 GBP), or both.
