China: Short drama production in China operates like a high-speed factory for viral hits
[Voiceover] Fast to film. Fast to deliver. Fast to captivate the world. At Quzhou’s Meigao Super Factory, China’s short drama industry now operates like a well-oiled machine. Thirty film crews can work simultaneously across 200 custom-built sets covering 65,000 square meters, from luxury mansions to hospital. Producer Aggie Yu, who makes short dramas for the North American market, is currently shooting two series here. [Soundbite] Aggie Sun, Short Drama Producer: "I used to shoot mostly on location in Los Angeles, but here the costs are much lower — studio fees are at least half the price. The shooting schedule for a 60-episode short drama can be reduced from 9 or 10 days to less than a week. Everything is right next to the sets, including on-site accommodation, which makes production much more convenient." [Voiceover] Even first-time visitors can experience this speed — arriving with nothing and leaving with a fully produced custom short drama. [Soundbite] Dai Wenxue, General Manager, Quzhou Chaoqilin Holding Group: "We provide tailored production packages. Meigao's 200+ skilled staff handle every step: scriptwriting, directing, filming, and platform distribution." [Voiceover] This fully closed-loop workflow, however, is completely powered by AI just five hours drive away at Versatile AI Virtual Film Base in Deqing. I’m standing in one of its five LED virtual studios, where I can go from Zhejiang to Beijing in a heartbeat — or jump from the height of summer to the depths of winter in an instant. [Soundbite] Shen Chenqi, General Manager, Versatile AI Virtual Film Base: "It is 5,000 square meters and features a 270-degree curved screen, making it the largest of its kind in the world." [Voiceover] Here, costly large-scale sets — from natural disasters to epic war scenes — come to life entirely on virtual environments displayed on LED screens. Scene changes can be completed in just minutes, saving 20–30% in costs. Virtual production technology is unleashing creativity like never before, bringing to life countless imaginative concepts once limited by physical constraints or production budgets.
