Gaza Strip: Journalists in Gaza vow to continue reporting despite Israel's killing of journalists
Journalists in Gaza have vowed to continue reporting from the embattled enclave despite a mounting death toll among their colleagues. The most recent victims, Anas al-Sharif and Mohammed Qreiqeh, Al Jazeera correspondents in Gaza City and northern Gaza, photojournalists Ibrahim Zaher and Momen Aliwa, assistant cameraman Mohammed Noufal, and local journalist Mohammed al-Khalidi, were killed late Sunday when an Israeli airstrike hit a tent they used as a workspace. Local residents gathered to mourn the slain journalists with colleagues promising to continue reporting despite the risks. Mahmoud Shalha, a Gaza journalist who was Anas al-Sharif's nephew, said that his uncle taught him how to be a journalist and he will never give up reporting the truth from Gaza. "They (the Israelis) killed him. They killed him because he was filming. Even if you (the Israelis) kill me, I will continue filming. And I will follow the path he taught me. He is the one who raised me. He is my father. I used to call him 'father.' He taught me how to be a journalist. I am willing to die the way he died. He is the soul of my soul. He is the dearest to me. How can I see him like this?" he said. Saleh Aljafarawi, a Palestinian YouTuber whose videos show the world the extent of devastation that Israeli bombardment has caused in Gaza, said the journalists were killed for their commitment to their careers and feared that Israel will continue to target journalists in the enclave. "I swear by almighty God, they (the Israelis) only targeted him because he was filming and documenting the crimes. From the moment he started filming, they were plotting against him and wanted to kill him. What crime did he even commit? His 'crime' was that he kept filming and telling the truth. His only 'crime' was being a journalist. So far, we have had more than 220 martyred journalists. For the sake of the profession and for the sake of Palestine," he said. On Monday, the Al-Shifa Medical Complex in Gaza City was filled with mourners as the bodies of the slain Palestinian journalists, wrapped in shrouds and Palestinian flags, were carried to their final resting place. Dozens of Palestinians, including fellow reporters and photographers, had gathered earlier in the hospital courtyard for funeral prayers. Since the conflict between Hamas and Israel erupted in Oct 2023, more than 200 media workers have been killed in Gaza. SHOTLIST: Gaza City, Gaza Strip - Aug 10, 2025 1.
