Carrying banners reading “Stop the genocide. Silence kills” and “Anas al-Sharif, journalist killed by Israel in Gaza,” protesters chanted slogans such as “We are proud of Palestinian journalists” and “There is genocide in Gaza; we will not remain silent.”
During the protest, the will written by Al Jazeera correspondent al-Sharif before his death was read aloud. He was killed in a direct Israeli attack on a journalists’ tent near Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza City. Some participants wept as the will was read.
Speakers at the event highlighted the crucial role of Palestinian journalists in conveying developments in the region to the international public and condemned Israel’s killing of Palestinian journalists in Gaza.
– ‘Deliberately targeted’
Fatiha, an economist who attended the demonstration and declined to provide her surname, told Anadolu Agency she has tried to participate in protests for Gaza since October 2023.
She said Israel bombed journalists sheltering in a tent, adding about the six Palestinian journalists killed on Aug. 10, including Al Jazeera’s Anas al-Sharif and Mohammed Quraikah, “They were deliberately targeted.”
Emphasizing that journalists in Gaza are the only ones able to provide information about the situation, she said, referring to Israeli authorities, “They are not allowing foreign journalists in. They are not allowing anyone in.”
Following the attack, the number of journalists killed by Israel since the start of the war rose to 238.
