India: Monsoon fury turns mountain route into danger zone as rescue operation opens alternate path for stranded devotees
Guwahati, India - August 29, 2025 Due to relentless rainfall and frequent boulder falls, the route between Sonprayag and Gaurikund in the Munkatiya region became fully blocked. In response, rescue teams guided stranded pilgrims to safety using newly created alternate paths amidst challenging conditions. The incident took place between Sonprayag and Gaurikund in the Munkatiya area, in Rudraprayag district, in northern India's Uttarakhand, on July 29. The rescue effort continued from July 30 to August 1. Visuals show that due to bad weather and road blockage caused by fallen debris, SDRF personnel are seen rescuing devotees by carrying them on their shoulders and guiding them out through an alternative route. Speaking to Newslions, Vinit Vaibhav, SDRF constable, Uttarakhand, stated that on July 29, 2025, persistent rainfall and frequent rockfalls caused a complete blockage along the Kedarnath pilgrimage route between Sonprayag and Gaurikund, specifically in the Munkatiya region. Due to safety concerns, clearing the debris with JCB machines during nighttime hours wasn’t feasible, which led to a temporary halt in the restoration process. The continuous falling of boulders posed serious challenges to the clearance efforts. Given the situation, a rescue team from the Sonprayag SDRF post, headed by Sub-Inspector Ashish Dimri, was dispatched beyond Gaurikund to assist stranded pilgrims via alternative paths. The previously built temporary foot route had sustained damage from the intense rainfall. In response, the SDRF team, with help from local police, established a new alternate path and safely escorted pilgrims returning from Kedarnath through the vulnerable section. As of 4 pm, a total of 1,088 pilgrims, comprising 855 men, 204 women, and 29 children, had been rescued safely. The team continues its presence at the site, with relief and rescue activities still in progress. Authorities have advised all pilgrims to stay updated on weather conditions and strictly adhere to administrative guidelines.
