Planes struggle to land as Typhoon Podul hits Taiwan
This is the dramatic moment planes struggled to land as Typhoon Podul battered Taiwan.
Footage shows an EVA Air cargo aircraft approaching the runway, just inches from touching down, when the pilot suddenly pulled up to perform a go-around at Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport on August 12.
The Boeing 777 later attempted a second landing and successfully touched down despite the rough winds.
The filmer said: 'Can't come down, really. Hard work everyone in the aviation industry.'
Tracking data shows flight BR609 departed Los Angeles International Airport at 10:09 am and landed in Taiwan at 3:06 pm, nearly 90 minutes behind its scheduled arrival of 1:35 pm.
Another video clip shows a Peach Aviation plane swaying from side to side before managing to land safely on the tarmac.
Worried passengers clung to their seats as the Airbus A320 rocked in the strong winds before touching down.
One traveller aboard flight MM925 from Okinawa said: 'Thank you to the captain for their professional skills. I was really super nervous and sweating like I had just washed my hands.'
Typhoon Podul swept across southern Taiwan, bringing wind speeds of up to 191 kph (118 mph). The system triggered widespread closures across the island and led to the cancellation of hundreds of flights.
The Central Weather Administration reported that Podul made landfall in the southeastern city of Taitung at around 1 pm local time on Wednesday. The typhoon then moved across Taiwan's southern tip before entering the Taiwan Strait around three hours later.
Authorities said more than 8,000 residents were evacuated as a safety measure. One person remains missing, and at least 112 injuries have been reported.
