Hungary: Chinese EV battery giants ramp up investment in Hungary
Storyline: Chinese EV battery giants ramp up investment in Hungary [Voice_over] Will Hungary become the next China when it comes to electric vehicle manufacturing? Chinese investors are hoping so. In Debrecen, a city over 200 kilometers from the capital Budapest, a group of China's leading NEV battery makers are building factories, forming a relatively complete industrial cluster. Chinese battery maker CATL is investing more than 7 billion euros into a 100GWh battery factory, while EVE Energy, another Chinese NEV battery giant, is scheduled to open its plant in 2027. EVE Energy's site will become the company's production base for large cylindrical batteries for passenger cars in Europe, with an annual production capacity of 30GWh, which is expected to create about 1,000 jobs locally. The general manager of another Chinese battery manufacturing firm already established in the country explained why Hungary was so crucial for Europe's electric vehicle market. [Sound_bite] Hu Tao, general manger, Semcorp Hungary: "First, energy costs in Hungary are lower than that in Western Europe. Second, Hungary boasts a relatively complete industrial chain in its automotive sector, which can provide us with well trained technicians. Third, and most importantly, Hungary is geographically close to our customers." [Voice_over] More than 50 of the world's top 100 automotive and parts suppliers have production facilities in Hungary. Plus, its geographic location in Central Europe makes it an important transportation hub connecting the Eastern and Western parts of the continent. [Restrictions : No access Chinese mainland]
