Storyline: Recycled food containers get new life as public furniture in Shanghai [Voice_over] You might mistake this new piece of public furniture in a community center in Shanghai for a piece of art. But this rounded looking object is actually a bench. And it was made from 100 percent recycled materials. The 3D-printed white park bench was manufactured from roughly 1,000 discarded polypropylene food containers collected from the neighborhood’s recycling kiosks. Residents in the community say the project offers a vivid lesson in sustainability. [Sound_bite] Local resident: "This bench has been warmly welcomed by everyone in our compound. It's great - people bring their waste here to recycle, the area stays cleaner with garbage sorting, and we all get something useful in return." [Voice_over] Shanghai was the first city in China to have a mandatory garbage sorting program, which started in 2019. [Restrictions : No access Chinese mainland]
