Dozens of fans were injured when violence erupted during a football match in Argentina on Wednesday night.

Argentine side Independiente and Chilean club Universidad de Chile were level at 1-1 when fights broke out in the stands in Buenos Aires in the second half.

The game was abandoned as officials battled to control the unrest. Local media reported that two fans were stabbed and one has life-threatening injuries. Dozens of others were injured.

Police reportedly arrested more than 90 supporters.

South American football's governing body (CONMEBOL) said the match had been cancelled due to 'the lack of security guarantees from the local club and local security authorities'.
