Storyline: China's instant retail expands to non-food categories [Voice_over] More and more Chinese nationals are getting used to buying things online for immediate delivery. In China, the "instant retail" model has typically been limited to food and beverages, but lately, people are ordering everything from computer chargers to footwear to clothing. This person said he was asked to go on a last-minute business trip, but didn't have the necessary power bank. To save time while he was packing, he ordered what he needed online, and it was delivered less than 30 minutes later. [Sound_bite] Mr. Han, Shenzhen resident: "It really took less than 20 minutes—even more convenient than going out to buy it myself. If I had gone downstairs to look for one, I might have had to search everywhere because I wouldn't know which stores sell power banks with 3C certification. But online, it's very clear and straightforward." [Voice_over] As flash shopping becomes more frequent, especially for things like electronics, some mobile phone retail stores say they've seen rapid growth in instant sales. [Sound_bite] Chen Juan, General Manager for Sales in Shenzhen, mobile phone brand: "Growth from March to July this year has been particularly noticeable. Instant retail orders across all our stores in Shenzhen have reached about 1,500 units. Orders during the same period last year were likely only about 20 percent of the current volume." [Voice_over] According to data from a flash shopping app in the country, electronics like smartwatches, tablets, and laptops are amongst the most ordered items, while running shoes, sportswear, and other athletic apparel are also ordered frequently.
