Storyline: New UHV power link boosts China's clean energy transmission [Voice_over] China's State Grid Corporation recently activated a new ultra-high volt energy line to bring green power from the Gobi Desert to cities across central China. According to officials from the group, the Ningxia-Hunan transmission line runs more than 1,600 kilometers across five regions starting in northern China's Zhongwei City and ending in central China's Hengyang City. The line is expected to transmit over 36 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity annually, more than 50 percent of which will come from renewable sources like wind and solar. [Sound_bite] Wang Jin, engineer, UHV Engineering Department, State Grid: "The project was planned and constructed with renewable energy as the absolute main source of outbound power. Renewable installations account for over 70 percent of its capacity. It will strongly support the large-scale development of renewable bases in desert and barren areas, optimize cross-regional energy allocation, help build a new-type power system, and promote coordinated development between central and western regions." [Voice_over] Officials from the company say ultra-high voltage lines are stronger and have greater capacity than traditional lines and are vital for delivering renewable energy from remote locations. The project, which cost upwards of 3.8 billion U.S. dollars to build, is expected to generate more than 17 gigawatts of electricity including 4 gigawatts of wind power and 9 of solar power.
