Dramatic footage from Kathmandu shows thick black smoke rising high into the skyline after protesters set fire to Nepal’s Parliament building in New Baneshwor. The smoke was visible from across the city, symbolizing the escalating violence of the youth-led Gen-Z movement.

The attack comes amid nationwide anger over corruption, lack of transparency, and a controversial social media ban that had briefly been imposed by Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli’s government. Although the ban was lifted, it triggered a wave of anti-corruption protests that have since spiraled out of control.

The unrest turned deadly after police opened fire on demonstrators, killing at least 19 protesters—an incident that fueled further outrage and ultimately forced Prime Minister Oli to resign.

In Kathmandu, protesters have not only torched Parliament but also targeted the Supreme Court, the Attorney General’s Office, the ruling party headquarters, media houses, and residences of top political leaders. Security forces, overwhelmed by the scale of the violence, have deployed the Nepali Army and imposed a curfew across the capital in an attempt to restore order.

The Parliament fire is being seen as a defining image of the crisis, with smoke rising above Kathmandu’s skyline marking one of the darkest moments in Nepal’s recent political history.
