TUNISIAN ACADEMIC SAED BOUAJLA SPEAKING TO ANADOLU (Arabic)TUNIS, TUNISIA - SEPTEMBER 15: Several public figures in Tunisia including artists, singers and academics join in the Global Sumud Flotilla, which aims to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza and break the blockade imposed by Israel for years. Anadolu reporter interviewed academics and artists participating in the Global Sumud Flotilla on Monday, which includes dozens of Tunisians from various professions. Tunisian actor Mohammed Murad, waiting to board the boats heading from the port of Sidi Bousaid in the capital Tunis to Gaza, said, “I am joining this flotilla because this is what anyone can do at least instead of watching what has been happening in Gaza for two years. When the opportunity arose, I had to contribute; I couldn't miss this chance.” "Any person knows the risks when making such a decision. They consider the worst-case scenario and the best-case scenario. The best-case scenario is reaching Gaza, breaking the blockade, and delivering aid. Threats were expected, but no one backed down. On the contrary, this situation made us even more determined," Mourad said. - Simplest humanitarian duty Tunisian rap singer Mohammad Amin Hamzawi also said before boarding the ship, “This is the simplest humanitarian duty I can do in response to what is happening in Gaza.” Hamzaw said, "It is impossible to remaini indifferent in an environment where children are dying of hunger. That is why I thought I should be part of the Global Sumud Flotilla. Otherwise, I wouldn't be able to rest easy." Regarding possible attacks, Hamzawi commented, “Yes, we expect Israel to attack us, but targeting someone performing a humanitarian duty would be foolish.” Tunisian Academic Said Bouacle, who previously reported joining the Maghreb Sumud Convoy blocked by Haftar forces in the Libyan city of Sirte, has now stated that he has joined the Global Sumud Flotilla to reach Gaza. - "Participation in the flotilla necessary duty to break the siege in Gaza" Bouacle said, "Our participation in the flotilla is a necessary duty to break the siege on Gaza. Because we are on the verge of a historic transformation of civilization." "Faced with the tyranny and brutality of the imperialist alliance, we can do nothing but elevate reason, civilization, and human values. Our weapon is entirely a rational, civilized, and humane movement. Unlike the senseless violence carried out by the Zionists under Trump's watch, our initiative is peaceful, Bouacle said. A total of 16 ships set sail from Tunisian ports to join the flotilla. The initiative began last month with ships departing from Barcelona, Spain, and Genoa, Italy, before converging with North African participants in Tunisia. Organizers called it unprecedented compared to previous attempts with single vessels, which were intercepted by Israel and their passengers deported. The convoy is now the largest of its kind, aiming to reach Palestinians in Gaza, where famine conditions have taken hold under Israel’s closure of all crossings. Israel has killed nearly 65,000 Palestinians, most of them women and children, in Gaza since October 2023. The military campaign has devastated the enclave, leaving it uninhabitable and fueling starvation and disease. Last November, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza. Israel also faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice for its war on the enclave.
