A Thai army general said there were no plans to reopen the border with Cambodia amid a tense truce between the two countries.

Lieutenant General Boonsin Padklang, commander of the 2nd Army Region, said that border checkpoints will remain closed 'until security measures are fully prepared'.

He made the statement during a talk about the territorial conflict at the Chiang Mai Rajabhat University on Monday, where more than 2,000 students were briefed about the ongoing dispute at the Thai-Cambodia frontier

The army chief said: 'The decision rests with the government, which must consider several aspects, while the army's role is to present on-the-ground information to support decision-making.

'Reopening will not happen until security measures are fully prepared, as security must take precedence over short-term economic benefits. This is a strategic tactic to create an advantage and de-escalate the border situation without bloodshed.'

The general warned that rushing to open the borders could open Thailand to illegal immigration and drug trafficking.

He urged the patriotic youths to join the army and to be wary of fake news on social media.

Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul also confirmed there were no immediate plans to reopen border crossings at the Federation of Thai Industries meeting on Monday.

He said: 'Let me assure you, the border crossings will not reopen in the short term. Please do not be concerned. We must use every measure—military, diplomatic, and negotiations with Cambodia—to resolve the conflict swiftly, while standing firm on our principles.'

A bloody military confrontation flared in long-disputed border areas as Thailand and Cambodia accused each other of instigating the violence on July 24.

The Thai army claimed the clash began when six armed Cambodian soldiers approached a Thai outpost after a drone was heard near a disputed Khmer temple. Thai troops said they shouted warnings and claimed the Cambodians opened fire first.

However, Cambodia's Defence Ministry accused Thailand of provoking the violence, saying its forces acted in self-defence.

Officials said that dozens of people have been killed and more than 300,000 displaced on both sides of the border.

Both sides have reached a shaky truce following talks facilitated by Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, chair of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).
