Cities across south China's Guangdong Province have geared up for Typhoon Mitag, the 17th typhoon of this year, after its landfall in the province on Friday afternoon. The typhoon, with the maximum wind force near its center reaching 25 meters per second, churned ashore at Guangdong's Shanwei City. Meteorological authorities forecast that Mitag will continue moving to the northwest at a speed of 10 to 15 kilometers per hour and gradually weaken as it moves inland. Shanwei has proactively implemented all safety control measures for maritime and coastal storm preparedness. At 18:00 Thursday, the Shanwei flood control, drought relief, and typhoon prevention command elevated its typhoon emergency response. By noon Thursday, all 7,114 fishing vessels in Shanwei had returned to port for shelter. Staff from 31 marine ranches and 165 fish farm workers had been evacuated ashore. In addition, all four coastal tourist attractions had been closed. All schools across the city had suspended classes. According to Shanwei traffic police, all highway toll station entrances were closed to traffic starting at 13:00 on Friday. On Friday morning, before the typhoon made landfall, industrial surveillance footage captured the scene in the southern waters off Guangdong's Shantou City. The footage was captured at 9:00 at Huaneng Shantou Lemen Offshore Wind Farm. On-site monitoring indicated sustained wind speeds in the area reaching 15 meters per second, with the instantaneous maximum wind speed exceeding 19.23 meters per second. The surveillance footage showed dark clouds hanging low over the sea, churning waves, and a dense curtain of rain that nearly obscured visibility. The monitoring camera itself shook violently in the typhoon's grip. Howling winds battered the external facilities of the wind farm's onshore switch station and offshore booster station, while trees swayed violently in the storm. Currently, all 54 wind turbines at the wind farm remain operational with full capacity. SHOTLIST: Shanwei City, Guangdong Province, south China - Sept 19, 2025 1.
