Storyline: Shanghai fabric markets draw foreign shoppers with custom-made apparel, seamless payment [Voice_over] With seamless payment and tax refund processes, Shanghai has emerged as a top shopping destination for foreign visitors, especially when it comes to custom made apparel. At one bustling fabric market in the city's Huangpu District, tourists order fitted, detailed garments and are delighted to learn they can be sewn in under two weeks. [Sound_bite] Dirk Winkelmann, German tourist: "It's very individualized, so I really like it. And you can combine a lot of different patterns. So, it expresses the creativity of the people and the craftsmen to create such things." [Voice_over] Shanghai's effort to enhance the shopping experience for international visitors is paying off. In May, the district was the first in the country to introduce a self-serve tax refund kiosk, accessible with a tap of your phone, for instant tax refunds via mobile payments. Officials say there are now more than 300 departure tax refund stores in the District, a more than 150 percent increase from last year. [Sound_bite] Liu Jing, head, Goods and Services Tax Division, Huangpu District Tax Bureau: "Six tax refund upon purchase service points have now been established across major commercial areas in Huangpu District." [Voice_over] According to data from the Shanghai Municipal Commission of Commerce from July 4th to August 14th this year, tax refund shops across Shanghai generated 66 million U.S. dollars in sales of tax-refundable goods, a more than 83 percent increase from the same period last year.
