A Dutch tourist was rescued after falling from a waterfall in Indonesia.

Johannes Antonie Hengeveld, 68, was with his wife and friends trekking through the Lombongo Waterfalls in Bone Bolango Regency, on September 13.

The holidaymaker was standing on a boulder taking pictures when he reportedly slipped on the wet surface. He fell around five feet, breaking his leg as he landed on boulders and leaving him unable to descend the mountain.

A rescue team was dispatched to the area nestled in the Bogani Nani Wartabone National Park at around 11 am local time.

Heriyanto, head of the Head of the Gorontalo Province Search and Rescue Office (KPP), said: 'At around 11 am, the victim along with a group of 19 foreign tourists headed to Lombongo waterfall.

'Johanes slipped and fell at Lombongo waterfall and suffered a fractured tibia, upper lower leg and femur. Then the Bogani National Park officer contacted the Gorontalo KPP communication center officer to ask for evacuation assistance for the victim.'

Rescuers reached the scene at around 12 noon, but they spent nearly hours carrying the injured tourist through dangerous terrain amid heavy rain.

Officials said the rescue mission was completed at 9:55 pm. Johannes, accompanied by his wife Martina Jacoba Maria, was rushed to Aloei Saboe Regional Hospital where he remains under intensive care.

The tour guide, Arung, said Johannes was part of a group of 20 tourists on an itinerary across the mountainous Sulawesi island. The hikers began their journey from a hot spring at 9 am, before making their way to the base of the waterfall.

Heriyanto said: 'We urge tourists and guides to exercise extra caution, especially during bad weather, as a similar incident happened last year.'

Lombongo Waterfall in Bone Bolango Regency is known for its natural beauty but is also notorious for its hazardous terrain. Visitors must negotiate steep hills, slippery rocks and cross six rivers to reach the site, which becomes more dangerous during heavy rain.
