Participants expressed appreciation for the recognition but urged the international community to support the move with concrete steps on the ground and to help end the situation in Gaza. Nabeel Mesalameh from Ramallah said the recognition came after years of struggle and sacrifices by the Palestinian people, stressing that international recognition should be translated into realities on the ground. Issam Izzet said he hoped the recognition would contribute to establishing a Palestinian state, noting that such decisions had been long overdue but still significant. Falih Falih described the recognitions as an important step in acknowledging Palestinian rights. He highlighted the importance of the United Kingdom’s recognition, given its role in the Balfour Declaration, saying it may represent an effort to address a historical wrong. Faize Abu Hijah, a member of the Palestinian Women’s General Secretariat, said the recognitions were a positive development but emphasized that stopping the situation in Gaza and ending policies of killing, annexation, and settlement in the West Bank are equally important. She also called for the establishment of an independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital and the right of return for refugees. With the latest announcements, the number of UN members states that officially recognize the state of Palestine rose to 159 out of 193. Since Oct. 7, 2023, Israel has been carrying out a genocide in Gaza, which has killed more than 65,000 Palestinians, most of them women and children. The military campaign has devastated the enclave and led to famine.
