Hairy Mary Caterpillars are the larvae of the Variable Anthelid or Lappet moth, Anthelia varia, that is found in the coastal areas of Southern Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia and southern Western Australia. The caterpillars grow to about 90 mm in length and have hollow red and black and white hairs that contain venom. These hairs may cause severe irritation, including allergic rashes, breathing difficulties and sometimes anaphylactic shock if handled carelessly. The cocoons and shed skins of Hairy Mary. caterpillars also have irritating hairs and should be left well alone.
