Birmingham University Medical Society legendary fancy dress bar crawl attracts over a THOUSAND students
Birmingham University's Medical Society hosted its annual 'The Hop' bar crawl, attracted over a THOUSAND students in incredibly creative costumes.
The event, a 25-year tradition, saw a diverse range of homemade outfits parading down Broad Street, from unemptied bins to hilarious movie characters, all while promoting responsible fun.
The annual event took place on Thursday (25 Sept.) evening. The event has no theme and a plethora of outfits, many homemade, are donned and flaunted down the Birmingham’s Broad Street nightclub strip.
This year 1,300 students attended, which is rumoured to be the largest student fancy dress night in the country. The Freshers Week party has run each year, except in 2020 due to COVID for the past 25 years.
They arrived by train, tram, bus and taxi onto the strip to the first bar, Barbara's Bier Haus where they queued up and posed for pictures.
This years amazing outfits included:
Unemptied bins, complete with ‘Rats the size of Cats’ as a play on the city’s continued bin strikes.
A group of Ibiza Final Boss Men
A pack of blue 'love pills' and an inflatable penis
A pose of King Julien XIII’s from Madagascar 3
Ozzy the Bull
A couple of Beaker’s from the Muppets
Salad Fingers and The Perfect Spoon
The Hungry Caterpillar
The Simpsons
Kris Jenner(s)
Kellogg’s breakfast cereal boxes
The Movie, UP and many more!
The students, all from the University of Birmingham Medical Society, also known as MedSoc, have honed down their ability to having a good night without adding pressure to the NHS as they partied without incident or the need for additional medical assistance, showing other Freshers from around the country how to have a good time without getting totally wasted.
First years are given a T-Shirt to remember the night then 2nd years upwards are challenged to make the best fancy dress outfits they can.
The undergraduates range from future doctors to dentists to biomedical scientists and other medical professionals and study at the University of Birmingham Medical School which is one of Britain’s largest with typical courses lasting for five years, giving them 4 years to craft their Fancy Dress skills.
In the past, some medical students were even seen taking care of an unconnected reveller who had a mishap on the street, caring for him until paramedics arrived, despite being dressed up like Duracell bunnies!
Previous outfits have also included a North Korea Ballistic Missile, a Spacey McSpace Face Rocket, Collin the Caterpillar, a pack of Durex Condoms, A Tesco Meal Deal and a pack of Cheesestrings!
The students have a new Hop themed cocktail called ‘The Lenny’ (named after their society mascot, including Vodka, Peach Schnapps, Orange and Cranberry Juice - which is basically a Sex on the Beach). This has replaced the ‘Heidi’ which was two shots of Archers, two of Smirnoff and one of Malibu - which was originally made by a Birmingham medical student who is now a GP. It is not known why the switch was implemented.
After they had spent a couple of hours in Barbara’s, they moved on to Birmingham’s oldest and most famous club, SNOBS to party the night away.
