VARIOUS OF JEWISH GROUP, ESCORTED BY POLICE, WALKING TO AL-SA COMPOUND 5. VARIOUS OF JEWISH MAN BEING DRAGGED TO VEHICLE BY POLICE OFFICERS AT AL-AQSAJERUSALEM - OCTOBER 2: Dozens of Israelis escorted by police entered the Al-Aqsa Mosque complex in East Jerusalem on Thursday, Oct. 2, with Palestinian authorities condemning the move as a "raid" and a violation of the sacred site's status. The entry occurred under the pretext of the Yom Kippur holiday, the most sacred day in Judaism, also known as the "Day of Atonement." A Jewish man in the group was dragged to a vehicle by police officers at Al-Aqsa compound. According to witnesses, the groups performed religious rituals within the mosque compound, using the site as if it were a temple. The Jerusalem Islamic Waqf Department, which administers the site, reported that Israeli police accompanied the settlers during the incident. The Waqf Department, which operates under Jordan's Ministry of Awqaf, Islamic Affairs, and Holy Sites, strongly condemned the entry. In a statement, it emphasized that such visits are considered "raids" and a breach of the existing international agreements. The status of Al-Aqsa Mosque is governed by the 1994 peace treaty between Israel and Jordan, which grants the Jordanian-appointed Waqf Department custodianship over the Islamic holy site. However, since 2003, Israeli authorities have allowed such entries based on unilateral decisions, permitting groups to access the compound under heavy police protection without seeking permission from the Waqf Department. For Muslims, Al-Aqsa represents the world's third-holiest site. Jews, for their part, call the area the Temple Mount, saying it was the site of two ancient Jewish temples. Writing by Sibel Uygun
