Adorable footage shows a baby elephant taking its first steps.

The 250lb female Asian elephant calf was born at Fort Worth Zoo in Texas in August.

Her mom, Bluebonnet, 26, who was the first elephant calf to be born at the zoo in 1998.

The calf's father is a 32-year-old elephant named Romeo - making this calf a full sibling to almost four-year-old brother, Brazos.

The calf stood within six minutes of birth, was nursing within two hours, and was manoeuvring her trunk well almost immediately, all indications of a healthy baby elephant.

All the calves are given Texas-themed names and the zoo is asking the public to vote and decide what they should name the newest addition to the family.

This baby is Bluebonnet's third calf and first female, so as a nod to mom, Texas flower-themed names have been chosen as potential monikers for the newest member of the herd.

The options are Lady Bird (Birdie), Yellow Rose (Rosie), and Black-eyed Susan (Susie).

Voting is already taking place and will end on October 6 at 10am on the Fort Worth Zoo's website.
