(SOUNDBITE) (English) GERMAN JOURNALIST ANNA LIEDTKE, SAYING: “Hello, my name is Anna and I'm on ‘Conscience’ boat, still going to Gaza. We've been on our way for three or four days. I'm from Germany, I'm participating as a, yeah, participant from Germany. With the Global Sumud flotilla being attacked and all of them being, yeah, illegally intercepted and attacked by Israel, I think it's even more important that we keep going and that we're not turning around to also give the people in Gaza hope. When they saw that one boat almost made it through to Gaza, they were really happy. And also the fishermen were able to fish because all the, yeah, naval ships from Israel were occupied with, yeah, attacking the other boats. So this is really great news. And I think, yeah, it's important because this genocide has been going on for almost three years. The naval blockade has been going on for almost 20 years, and we all know that the genocide in Gaza didn't continue on the 7th of October. We all know that the damage and that the ethnic cleansing didn't begin on October 7th. So I think it's even more reason that we're on this boat as doctors, as journalists, because those professions are being attacked the most. So I think, yeah, it's really powerful that we're still going.”MEDITERRANEAN SEA (OCTOBER 3, 2025) (USERS MUST CREDIT ANNA LIEDTKE-MUST ON SCREEN COURTESY- FOR EDITORIAL USE ONLY) - German journalist Anna Liedtke, currently aboard the "Conscience" ship part of the Freedom Flotilla Coalition (FFC), has stated that their mission is crucial to "give the people in Gaza hope" and to challenge Israel's long-standing naval blockade. In an exclusive statement to Anadolu, Liedtke emphasized the profound impact the civilian flotillas have on the people of Gaza. "When they saw that one boat almost made it through to Gaza, they were really happy," she said, referring to a recent attempt. "I think it's even more important that we keep going and that we're not turning around." Liedtke joined the flotilla after the previous "Global Sumud Flotilla" was, in her words, "illegally intercepted and attacked by Israel." She placed the current crisis within a broader historical context, pushing back against the narrative that it began on Oct. 7, 2023. "This genocide has been going on for almost two years. The naval blockade has been going on for almost 20 years," Liedtke stated. "We all know that the genocide in Gaza didn't start on October 7th. We all know that the damage and the ethnic cleansing didn't begin on October 7th." Highlighting the specific role of the "Conscience" vessel, which is also known as the "Doctors and Journalists' Ship," Liedtke explained that their presence is a direct response to the targeting of these professions. "I think it's even more reason that we're on this boat as doctors, as journalists, because those professions are being attacked the most," she told Anadolu. The FFC, a network of civil society groups, reported that the flotilla has passed the Greek island of Crete and is continuing its course toward Gaza. The "Conscience" ship, carrying international medical personnel, reporters, and activists, rejoined the fleet after undergoing repairs following an incident off the coast of Malta on May 2, which the coalition described as an attack by Israel. The latest voyage is another attempt by the FFC to break the Israeli blockade of Gaza, which has been in place for nearly 18 years and has been severely tightened since the conflict escalated in October.
