Türkiye: 'A lot of swear words': Kuwaiti activist details harsh treatment after Israeli attack on Gaza aid flotilla
SHOTLIST: ISTANBUL, TÜRKİYE (OCTOBER 4, 2025) (ANADOLU - ACCESS ALL) 1. KUWAITI ACTIVIST MOHAMMAD JAMAL SPEAKING TO REPORTER UPON ARRIVAL IN ISTANBUL (English) ISTANBUL, TÜRKİYE - OCTOBER 4, 2025: A Kuwaiti activist from Global Sumud Flotilla said he and other activists were subjected to harsh conditions and mistreatment after Israeli forces attacked their vessel en route to Gaza. A plane carrying activists from the flotilla, who were attacked and detained by Israel in international waters, landed at the Istanbul Airport on Saturday afternoon. As many as 137 people from the humanitarian flotilla, including 36 Turkish and 23 Malaysian citizens, arrived by the flight. Mohammad Jamal, one of the activists, told Anadolu that his boat was seized at around 6 am by 20 Israeli soldiers. “We were kept under the sun for 12 hours, from the place we got captured to the port of Ashdod, where we got treated really badly,” Jamal said. “Throughout the whole time we did not have any food and we were only allowed to use water and go to the toilet,” Jamal said, adding that when they reached Ashdod port, Israeli police treated them “very badly.” Asked if they were beaten, Jamal said: “Some of the people got beaten, but a lot of swear words.” “It seems that they were under a lot of pressure from the world, so the people in the world made them behave (with us) better than what they were planning to behave, because they had so much rage and anger against us that they couldn't do anything because of the people.” “The people protected us by demonstrating and keeping their eyes on us,” the activist said, adding that Israel confiscated all their belongings except the passports. Jamal said detainees were held in poor conditions after their arrest. “We were three days in the jail without any water. There was only the water for washing. They told us just drink the same water you wash from. “There was no shower. The food was very scarce. No doctor. Some people had cardiac medicine, epilepsy medicine. They did not take their medicine.” “Again, I want to emphasize that they were under a lot of pressure from you, from the media, from the people of Turkey, from the people in Europe and all around the world. So we thank everybody and we need to keep our eyes on Gaza because they are doing what they cannot do to us in Gaza.”
