SUV overturns on sharp bend while delivering earthquake relief aid
This is the shocking moment an SUV overturned while delivering relief aid to earthquake victims in the Philippines.
The convoy of vehicles was taking supplies to northern Cebu province when they crashed at a sharp bend on October 5.
CCTV footage shows an out-of-control pickup truck ramming the SUV from behind, causing it to flip over on a downhill section of the Transcentral Highway.
The truck continued hurtling forward before smashing into a roadside barrier, scattering the road with boxes of relief goods.
Authorities said 10 people, including the drivers of both vehicles, were injured and rushed to a hospital.
Police Corporal Jun Carlo Dy, case investigator of Balamban Municipal Police Station, said: 'Some of the truck passengers were unconscious right after the crash, but they eventually regained consciousness while being treated at the Cebu Provincial Hospital in Balamban.'
The truck driver allegedly claimed he had a brake failure while driving through the sharp curve, adding he was distributing aid to earthquake-stricken residents in northern Cebu.
Local officials had earlier discouraged travel to the area due to traffic gridlock amid relief efforts.
A shallow magnitude 6.9 earthquake hit Cebu province on September 30, killing at least 72 people.
Assistant Secretary Bernardo Rafaelito Alejandro IV, officer-in-charge of the Office of Civil Defense (OCD), said today: 'As of this morning, our number of fatalities is 72. And as for the wounded, 559 have been reported to us. There were no reports of missing individuals.
'We are in the early recovery stage, clearing, and of course, repairing damaged facilities.'
Cebu is a popular tourist destination and a major economic hub in the country's Visayas region.
