INTERVIEW WITH HARIS LADROPOULOS, ONE OF THOSE WHO WELCOMED ACTIVISTS (Greek) 3. INTERVIEW WITH MARKOS KLONIZAKIS, SUPPORTER OF PALESTINE AT AIRPORT (Greek)ATHENS, GREECE - OCTOBER 6: A left-wing Greek politician Sia Anagnostopoulou expressed her gratitude to the activists of the Global Sumud Flotilla on Monday, Oct. 6. A total of 161 activists abuduted after the Israeli army attacked the Global Sumud Flotilla — which sought to break the illegal blockade on the Gaza Strip and deliver humanitarian aid — arrived at Eleftherios Venizelos Airport in Athens. Supporters of Palestine and relatives of the Global Sumud Flotilla activists welcomed them with excitement, holding flowers as they got off the plane. During the nearly four-hour wait at the Athens airport, participants chanted "Freedom for Palestine" and waved Palestinian flags in solidarity. Speaking to journalists during the wait, Greek MP Sia Anagnostopoulou commented on the Global Sumud Flotilla’s struggle for the freedom of the Palestinian people. She said humanity is grateful to the nearly 500 people — including 27 Greeks — who came from different parts of the world to Gaza, showing their commitment to principles, ideals, solidarity, and comradeship, and standing with the Palestinian people who have suffered for so many years. Anagnostopoulou noted that they were deeply concerned about the activists’ safety and health throughout the process, and described the Israeli National Security Minister’s labeling of the activists as terrorists as an unacceptable insult. She added that the Greek people would stand by the Palestinian people until they achieve what is rightfully theirs and have their own state. Haris Ladropoulos, one of those who welcomed the activists, said he was a member of a group actively supporting Palestine and the Global Sumud Flotilla, and that they were trying to genuinely break the blockade imposed by Israel on Gaza and Palestine. Ladropoulos emphasized that Greece and the European Union (EU), which continue to cooperate with Israel, bear great responsibility, adding: "We must believe in the power of the people, because in any struggle, results can only be achieved through the efforts of the people and workers." Markos Klonizakis, another supporter present at the airport, said they were proud of the activists of the Global Sumud Flotilla. Klonizakis said the activists had shown a great example of humanity for both Greece and the whole world. He added: "The entire world must understand this: you are either with Palestine, or with barbarism." The Global Sumud Flotilla, en route to break the Israeli blockade and deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza, approached Gaza waters on the evening of Oct 1. The Israeli army attacked the flotilla, illegally seizing dozens of boats and ships and detaining hundreds of their passengers. It was the largest flotilla to ever set out collectively to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza. Since Oct. 7, 2023, the Israeli military has killed over 67,100 Palestinians, most of them women and children, in Gaza. The relentless bombardment has rendered the enclave all but uninhabitable and has led to mass displacement, starvation, and the proliferation of disease. Last November, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza. Israel also faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice for its war on the enclave.
