Seawater gushes into residents' homes as Typhoon Matmo hits southern China
At around 2:50 p.m. on October 5, Typhoon Mitag, the 21st typhoon of the year, made landfall along the coast of Guangdong, China. At the time of landfall, maximum sustained winds near the center reached force 14 (42 metres per second), classifying it as a strong typhoon.
Video footage from Yangjiang, Guangdong, shows massive waves nearly 5 metres high crashing over the sea wall, with seawater surging back into residential areas and flooding multiple vehicles.
Another clip shows seawater surging into a home just as a woman was about to reinforce her doors and windows. She is seen retreating up her stairs.
Local government authorities in Yangjiang stated that no casualties have been reported so far, and the extent of the damage is still being assessed.
