Surrounded by towering mountains and lush green valleys, the city offers breathtaking landscapes and a deep connection to Tibetan traditions. One of its most important landmarks is a Tibetan Buddhist monastery, which serves as both a spiritual and educational hub. Inside its main hall stands an 8-meter-tall gilded Buddha statue — a powerful symbol of the area’s spiritual and cultural significance. Shangri-La is the largest town and administrative center of the Diqing Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture. Its name was inspired by the fictional paradise in British author James Hilton’s 1933 novel Lost Horizon, which tells the story of a hidden monastery in a remote mountain valley.
