Optus Sent Emails To Wrong Addresses During Deadly Outage. Australia’s Optus has come under scrutiny after it sent emails about a deadly telecommunications outage to the wrong address at the Department of Communications, leaving messages unread for more than a day. The outage on 18 September has been linked to four deaths, including an eight-week-old baby, as emergency calls failed. The first email, sent at 14:45, claimed only 10 calls were affected and that the issue had been resolved. In reality, over 600 emergency calls failed over 13 hours. Authorities only became aware of the scale of the outage more than 36 hours later, when the industry regulator flagged it. Deputy Secretary for Communications James Chisholm told parliament the error occurred despite telcos being notified of a recent email address change. Optus said the incident arose during a routine firewall upgrade. The Australian media regulator is investigating whether the company breached the law. Singaporean Prime Minister Lawrence Wong, whose company Singtel owns Optus, has expressed condolences and apologised.
