Displaced Palestinians hope Gaza ceasefire deal will hold
Storyline: Many displaced Palestinians who have been living in shelters in central Gaza for months are hoping the ceasefire deal between Hamas and Israel will hold. At a school-turned shelter run by the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) in central Gaza, displaced children were seen taking to the streets clapping hands as a peace plan paving way to ceasefire entered its first phase on Thursday. The Israeli government on early Friday approved the ceasefire deal with Hamas to end the war in Gaza and secure the release of all remaining hostages. Under the terms of the agreement, the peace plan is now in effect. "We pray that things continue to improve and that the joy of the long-suffering people will finally be complete. For those who lost their children and their homes, this nation has endured so much pain and deserves happiness, it must not be let down this time," said Um Ahmad Abdel-Aal, a displaced Palestinian at the shelter. "We pray that the truce will hold, that the war will not return. There has never been a war like this one we lived through, full of disease, exhaustion, hunger, and countless wounded," said another displaced Palestinian named Um Ashraf Shaheen. The agreement marks the first phase of a peace plan proposed by U.S. President Donald Trump. The plan includes a ceasefire, a phased Israeli withdrawal from Gaza, the release of all remaining Israeli hostages in exchange for Palestinian prisoners, and the entry of humanitarian aid into the Palestinian enclave. The announcement came after three days of indirect negotiations between Israel and Hamas in Egypt's Red Sea resort city of Sharm El Sheikh, with the participation of the United States, Egypt, Qatar and Türkiye. "I feel extremely happy after all that we have gone through in Gaza, a war of extermination and starvation that spared neither people nor stones, neither children nor the elderly. It was a war of destruction, and we thank God that it has stopped," said displaced Palestinian Yasser Attaouneh. "It's a day of celebration and joy for Palestinians, not only in Gaza but in the entire Arab world. It's a day of happiness for the children who lived under daily rockets and bombings. For us, the ceasefire feels like a holiday," said displaced Palestinian resident Youssef Abu Al-Jedyan. Israeli authorities have authorized hundreds of trucks to roll assistance into the Gaza Strip, a U.N. spokesman said Thursday. The United Nations has secured clearance from the Israeli authorities for 170,000 tons of food, health and nutrition supplies, as well as shelter items and other critical aid supplies, said Stephane Dujarric, spokesperson for U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. These supplies are currently in the region -- mainly in Israel, also in the West Bank, in Jordan, Egypt and Cyprus, he said, adding that unimpeded access to the Strip was being sought, and that meant the opening of all crossings into Gaza. The U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said the humanitarian community's initial response plan for the first 60 days of the ceasefire prioritizes restoring hundreds of community-based and household-level distribution and services, a proven way to reach the most vulnerable.
