The truce, which came into effect after heavy Israeli strikes, allowed for the first clear view of the damage in areas like Nasr Street, where severely damaged buildings and cratered roads underscored the intensity of the recent hostilities. The deal, announced Wednesday, envisions a ceasefire in Gaza, the release of all Israeli captives in exchange for around 2,000 Palestinian prisoners, and a gradual withdrawal of Israeli forces from the entire Gaza Strip. A proposed second phase of the plan calls for establishing a new governing mechanism in Gaza without Hamas's participation and the formation of a new security force. The conflict, which began in October 2023, has resulted in the deaths of nearly 67,200 Palestinians in the enclave, most of them women and children, and has left the territory largely uninhabitable.
