Voters in Kosovo cast their ballots at 2,625 polling stations set up across 948 centers to elect 38 mayors and municipal assembly members by 7:00 p.m. local time.
A total of 5,626 candidates competed in the elections, including 206 for mayoral posts and the remainder for municipal assembly seats.
According to the latest data published at 7:39 p.m. local time on the website of the Central Election Commission of Kosovo (KQZ), 39.26 percent of the 795,033 registered voters had cast their votes by 7:00 p.m.
The KQZ reported that the voting process proceeded calmly overall, with no serious incidents affecting the course of the elections.
Following the end of voting, the counting process has begun, with unofficial first results expected to be announced by the KQZ before midnight.
To be elected in this round, mayors must receive more than 50 percent plus one of the votes in their municipalities. Otherwise, a second round will be held on the Sunday four weeks later between the two candidates with the highest votes.
Meanwhile, elections in four municipalities in northern Kosovo, predominantly inhabited by Serbs, carry particular significance due to tensions in recent years between the Serb and Albanian communities in the region.
Kosovo last held local elections in 2021.
