Storyline: Traditional cat-shaped roof figurines turn into everyday ornaments in SW China [Voice_over] In southwest China’s Yunnan Province, Chinese gargoyles called Wamao, or "tile cats", are moving from building rooftops to store and museum shelves as the region embraces this intangible cultural heritage item. Shaped like cats or tigers, their wide-open mouths are said to draw wealth from all directions, with some embellished with the character for "king" to convey authority and deterrence. Over the past few years, a new generation of Wamao inheritors have been creatively reinterpreting its form and innovating new applications for the creature. [Sound_bite] Tang Jiawen, head, cultural and creative brand: "It can be used as a fridge magnet. It is detachable to serve as either a ceramic ornament or a memo holder. With its adorable design and auspicious symbolism, Wamao not only represents our local culture but also stands as Yunnan's intangible cultural heritage." [Voice_over] Today, stores selling Wamao-themed cultural souvenirs are found across Yunnan. This Wamao museum has witnessed remarkable growth in product sales, which surged from just over 1,000 items in 2023 to more than 10,000 in 2024. Visitors to the region say they appreciate the variety in Wamao products. [Sound_bite] Peng Shiyun, visitor from Shanghai: "Since it's a tourist city, we certainly hope to encounter unique items. Therefore, Wamao embodies both the distinctive local cultural symbols, and a unique design. It is commendable for its pursuit of innovation and resonance with young people." [Voice_over] While modern Wamao can be made from just about anything, traditionally they’re made of white clay or ceramic. [Restrictions : No access Chinese mainland]
