UNCAPTIONED. UK Rejects Milei's Claims on Arms Talks and Falklands Sovereignty
UK Rejects Milei’s Claims on Arms Talks and Falklands Sovereignty. The UK government rejected Argentine President Javier Milei’s claim that the two countries were negotiating the lifting of long-standing arms export restrictions imposed after the Falklands War. A government spokesman said there were “no specific talks,” countering Milei’s comments to The Daily Telegraph suggesting discussions were underway to remove weapons bans. Milei argued that “there are no world powers without military power” and insisted Argentina must be able to defend its borders, while expressing hopes for improved bilateral relations. He also reiterated his desire for the Falkland Islands to return to Argentina through diplomatic means, though he ruled out seeking conflict with the UK. Downing Street firmly rejected this, saying Falklands sovereignty “is not up for negotiation,” citing the 2013 referendum in which islanders overwhelmingly voted to remain British. Milei indicated he wants to visit the UK in April or May and hopes to meet Sir Keir Starmer and Reform leader Nigel Farage, noting warm reactions from Farage and some Conservatives to his economic policies. If the trip goes ahead, Milei would be the first Argentine president to visit the UK since 1998, as tensions over the islands continue to shadow relations.
