UNCAPTIONED: Dramatic moment a determined kingfisher clashes with a giant lizard in a mid-air fight for survival
Dramatic moment a determined kingfisher clashes with a giant lizard in a mid-air fight for survival. This is the jaw-dropping moment a White-breasted Kingfisher is caught in a jaw-dropping mid-air battle with a large Oriental Garden Lizard. The extraordinary encounter was captured by wildlife photographer Tanmoy Das Karmakar in Purbasthali, West Bengal, India. The kingfisher grips the sizeable lizard in its beak, but the reptile launches a fierce counterattack, refusing to surrender. In an astonishing twist, the lizard bites onto the bird’s beak and clamps it shut with its hind legs, fighting back even as the kingfisher struggles to stay airborne. As the kingfisher attempts to land, the lizard slips from its grasp into the water, prompting the bird to dive after it in pursuit. What follows is a tense series of lunges, lifts and mid-air grapples as predator and prey battle with pure instinct and strength. Karmakar describes witnessing the scene as “unforgettable,” a moment that showcases the raw, instinctive resilience of the natural world. Despite its power, the kingfisher ultimately fails to subdue the unusually large lizard and releases it back into the water.
