PUS-PUS MOVING ON ROADTOLIARA, MADAGASCAR - OCT. 20, 2025: Powered by pedaling, the three-wheeled pus-pus taxi bicycles have been in high demand for many years in the African country of Madagascar, both for their affordability and for fast transportation. In the city of Toliara, the Malagasy people often choose them for urban transport because of their low cost and practicality, while tourists are also drawn to them as a way to experience the culture more authentically. Working as a pus-pus driver for three years to support his family, 20-year-old Rabe Manantsoa stated that many pus-pus drivers take this job because they have no alternative, and some days he doesn’t earn enough. During the colonial period, the French used the three-wheeled vehicles to provide transportation on the island, and when calling out to the drivers, they used the French word “pousser,” which means “to push.” Over time, the phrase the French used to address the Malagasy drivers, “pousser, pousser” (push, push), came to be used as the name of the vehicle.
