Egypt: Egypt’s Medinet Habu Temple preserves legacy of Pharaoh Ramses III
SHOTLIST: LUXOR, EGYPT (OCT. 21, 2025) (ANADOLU – ACCESS ALL) 1. VARIOUS OF MEDINET HABU TEMPLE WITH ITS WALLS AND COLUMNS COVERED IN WELL-PRESERVED RELIEFS AND HIEROGLYPHS, STATUES / VISITORS EXPLORING TEMPLE COMPLEXLUXOR, EGYPT - OCT. 21: Medinet Habu Temple, one of Egypt’s most significant ancient structures, offers visitors a journey through the pharaonic past with the history of a dynasty carved into its stone walls. Rising with massive columns and statues, the temple was built about 3,000 years ago on the west bank of the Nile River in Luxor. It can be reached by boat or via a recently constructed bridge. Visitors approaching the site pass royal tombs and ancient ruins before reaching the towering walls of the Habu Temple, where vivid colors and reliefs remain remarkably preserved. The temple was commissioned by Pharaoh Ramses III (1184–1153 B.C.) of the 20th Dynasty for rituals honoring the god Amun and for royal funerary ceremonies. The complex also includes remnants of a royal palace, warehouses, and administrative buildings. Nearby stands another temple built during the 12th Dynasty by Queen Hatshepsut and King Thutmose III, as well as tombs of the sacred wives of the god Amun-Ra dating to the 25th and 26th dynasties. A canal once connected the temple directly to the Nile. Egyptian archaeologist Megdy Shakir told Anadolu Agency that “Habu” signifies protection, festivals, or religious rituals, symbolizing immortality and the afterlife. Some researchers associate the name with Amenhotep, son of Habu — a vizier of Pharaoh Amenhotep III — while others link it to a priest who once lived in the area.
