Bomb explodes near train tracks injuring two people in southern Thailand
This is the shocking moment a bomb exploded near train tracks injuring two people in southern Thailand.
The explosive device went off while village officials were inspecting the railway in Narathiwat province early morning today.
CCTV footage shows the officers walking along the gravel path before the bomb detonated, showering them with shrapnel at around 6 am local time.
The men were seen trying to hobble away as dust covered the tracks.
An officer from Ranger Company 4506 and assistant village headman Ibrohim Gaje were rushed to the Ra-Ngae Hospital, where they remain under close medical supervision.
The State Railway of Thailand said in a statement: 'Officials are currently controlling the area, inspecting the damage, and expediting repairs to the tracks so the trains can resume operations as quickly as possible.
'The State Railway of Thailand apologizes for any inconvenience and assures the public that strict security measures are in place.'
Police believe the bomb may have been planted to target a passing train and cause mass casualties.
Investigators are continuing to sweep the area for more explosives.
Islamic separatist terror attacks target the three southernmost provinces of Thailand - Yala, Pattani and Narathiwat - next to the border with Mulsim neighbors Malaysia. Thai state employees and infrastructure are often hit while attacks on civilians are rare.
Officials believe the conflict dates to a deal in 1909 that the British Empire struck to incorporate the Muslim region into the Siamese mainland.
The region's culture is more similar to Malaysia and dramatically different to Buddhist Thais causing decades of tension that lead to the emergence of separatist groups fighting for independence in the 1960s.
The struggle has continued ever since with more than 7,344 people killed and 13,641 injured between January 2004 and March 2022.
The British Foreign & Commonwealth Office warns against all but essential travel to the region while Canada's government warns its nationals to 'avoid all travel' to the three provinces.
