Palestinian man digs through rubble with bare hands for bodies in Gaza
SHOTLIST GAZA STRIP, PALESTINE (OCTOBER 27, 2025) (ANADOLU-ACCESS ALL) 1. VARIOUS OF MEN WALKING ON RUBBLE, SEARCHING FOR DEAD BODIES 2. VARIOUS OF MOHAMMAD RAYHAN DIGGING THROUGH RUBBLE 3. (SOUNDBITE) (Arabic) MOHAMMAD RAYHAN, SAYING: “I live on Al-Banna Street, Al-Banna neighborhood. I am 39 years old. Of course, as you can see from the numbers, the situation is dire. I want to work on something that provides the basic necessities of life—there is no water, not even electricity, nor anything suitable for living or for anything." 4. WHITE FLASH 5. (SOUNDBITE) (Arabic) MOHAMMAD RAYHAN, SAYING: "I see that under the rubble on 26/9, four were hit and injured, and the rest were killed. My uncle was martyred, his son and his wife, and Rasaan Jadad was martyred as well. I also see two children of my uncle under the rubble. Of course, there are four layers. The Jews attacked again, the last time in Jabalia; four layers of rubble were on top of the injured. I see that there is still someone alive under the debris." 6. WHITE FLASH 7. (SOUNDBITE) (Arabic) MOHAMMAD RAYHAN, SAYING: "And I have asked this [aid organization] for help, and I have asked the Civil Defense. I have also asked the Arab Republic of Egypt and all the free and honorable people of the world. They counted our numbers and provided us with some equipment to help us get by, which is why you see us surviving. But the support we receive is insufficient and unlawful; we can barely sustain ourselves with it. As you can see, the situation with this aid is not great. And in this matter, I am someone who has been abandoned, except for Allah.” 8. WHITE FLASH 9. (SOUNDBITE) (Arabic) MOHAMMAD RAYHAN, SAYING: "And as for the necessities for a decent human life, you won't see them with me, but praise be to Allah in any situation…., in the situation that has befallen us, those who do not have anything for their children, no home, no health, no source of livelihood… and even when there is a source of income, it is insufficient, and they do not grieve over it." 10. WHITE FLASH 11. (SOUNDBITE) (Arabic) MOHAMMAD RAYHAN, SAYING: "We tried to dig out those who were trapped, those beside us, those under the rubble. Of course, everything is destroyed because of the explosions and the debris. I have been working for several days—I mean, it wasn’t easy. All the streets are two to three meters blocked. After that, I saw the remaining rubble being cleared at the end." 12. WHITE FLASH 13. (SOUNDBITE) (Arabic) MOHAMMAD RAYHAN, SAYING: "I mean, every day we are digging, and when we dig, we still cannot manage. We work with bare hands and simple tools. Today, we cannot even know how the building will collapse." 14. WHITE FLASH 15. (SOUNDBITE) (Arabic) MOHAMMAD RAYHAN, SAYING: "I counted nine bodies — nine bodies. That doesn’t include others we still don’t know about. We don’t know if anyone survived there; only Allah knows. They attacked us, and we were forced to flee. The strikes happened on the 16th; after that the bombardment continued. My uncle was killed, and our neighbor was the same. Layers of rubble fell on top of them —they weren’t the first to be buried; the whole situation is collapsed on top.” 16. WHITE FLASH 17. (SOUNDBITE) (Arabic) MOHAMMAD RAYHAN, SAYING: “The situation among humans is like complete destruction. It’s a terrible, heartbreaking story. There is no one to take care of us, and the chaos surrounds us. At night, it’s even worse. If you want to evacuate someone, it’s difficult to find any medical aid. Honestly, it takes seven kilometers to reach help, and even then, it’s almost impossible. The roads are blocked, and it feels like everything is going crazy." 18. VARIOUS OF MEN WORKING ON DESTROYED BUILDING, DIGGING DEBRIS 19. WIDE SHOT OF MAKESHIFT TENT ON RUBBLE 20. VARIOUS OF WOMEN AND CHILDREN OUTSIDE TENT 21. TIGHT SHOT OF TODDLER SITTING ON BRICK OUTSIDE TENT AS WOMEN LOOK AT HIM 22. LAUNDRY HANGING ON ROPE STRETCHED OVER RUBBLE GAZA STRIP, PALESTINE - OCTOBER 27: Days after a ceasefire, Muhammad Rayhan, a 39-year-old Palestinian, used his bare hands to claw through the concrete and debris in the Jabaliya region of the northern Gaza Strip, desperately searching for his relatives. The ceasefire had offered a brief respite, but shortly after it took effect, Israeli attacks struck his neighborhood, collapsing his home and burying his family underneath. "I counted nine bodies — nine bodies," Rayhan told Anadolu Agency, his voice heavy with grief and exhaustion. "That doesn’t include others we still don’t know about." He stated that many people remain trapped under the piles of buildings that collapsed on top of each other due to the bombardment. Among the dead are his uncle, his uncle's wife and son, and other family members. "We work with bare hands and simple tools," he said, describing the frantic, yet painstakingly slow, search and rescue efforts. "Today, we cannot even know how the building will collapse." Rayhan described a scene of utter devastation, with streets blocked by two to three meters of rubble, making movement and aid access nearly impossible. He recounted reaching out for help from aid organizations, the Civil Defense, and even the Arab Republic of Egypt. "But the support we receive is insufficient... we can barely sustain ourselves with it," he said. The widespread destruction in the area is making official search and rescue efforts extremely difficult. Rayhan called for more civil defense equipment to be sent to the teams struggling to cope with the scale of the disaster. The humanitarian crisis follows the attacks Israel launched on the Gaza Strip in October 2023. The ongoing conflict has reduced much of the territory, which has a population of 2.3 million and has been under a blockade since 2006, to rubble. According to Palestinian authorities, Israel’s military offensive has killed over 68,500 people and injured more than 170,300 others since October 2023. A ceasefire deal, which took effect on Oct. 10, includes the release of Israeli hostages in exchange for nearly 2,000 Palestinian prisoners. The plan also envisages the rebuilding of Gaza and the establishment of a new governing mechanism without Hamas. Writing by Sibel Uygun
