Weight a minute! Plates slide off squat bar hitting same man twice in minutes
On 23 September, in a gym in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, Mr Xu and a friend were warming up when an accident occurred. While his friend was lifting an SSB (safety squat bar), he failed to secure the collars that prevent the weights from slipping. As he stood up and lost balance, two weight plates on one side of the bar fell off in succession.
The first, a 10 kg plate, struck Mr Xu’s left foot; moments later, a 15 kg plate fell and hit his right hand.
As a result, Mr Xu suffered a torn nail bed on his right hand, requiring more than 20 stitches. His left foot was also injured but less severely.
Mr Xu said his friend had been careless, but he recovered quickly and was able to return to work and normal activities after just three days of rest.
