A faulty electric transformer is believed to have caused an explosion at a supermarket in Mexico, leaving at least 23 dead and 12 others injured.

The blast ripped through the Waldo's store in the city of Hermosillo, Sonora, on Saturday, November 1, at around 2 pm local time.

Public security officials confirmed that there was no evidence of a deliberate attack or any act of violence targeting civilians.

Sonora Governor Alfonso Durazo said: 'Sadly, a number of the victims we've found were minors. I have ordered an extensive and transparent investigation to determine the causes of the incident and figure out those responsible.

'Nobody will face this pain alone. From the very first moments, emergency, security, and health services responded with great professionalism and commitment, controlling the situation and saving lives.'

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum also expressed her condolences to the victims' families.

She said: 'I have been in contact with the Sonora governor, Alfonso Durazo, to provide support where needed. I've instructed Interior Secretary Rosa Icela Rodriguez to send a support team to assist the families and the injured.'

The explosion occurred over the weekend as Mexico observed the Day of the Dead, a time when families commemorate and pay tribute to their deceased loved ones.

Authorities continue to investigate the incident.
