KHAN YOUNIS, GAZA, PALESTINE - NOVEMBER 5, 2025: Palestinian health worker Mohammed Abu Sido, who was captured by Israeli forces from Nasser Hospital while on duty during the genocie in Gaza, has returned to his post as head of the transfer unit at Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis, southern Gaza, after being released under a ceasefire and prisoner exchange deal.

Before his detention, Abu Sido worked at the same hospital, assisting in the transfer of bodies and wounded patients. Following his release, he immediately resumed his duties, the same work he was doing before his illegal arrest, overseeing the transfer of bodies arriving at the hospital.

Abu Sido said that identifying the bodies handed over by Israel has become almost impossible. “The bodies are burned; there are no facial features left to recognize,” he told reporters. “We try to identify them by their shoes or clothing.”

He added that hospital staff project recognizable parts of the bodies on a screen to help relatives identify their loved ones.

The total number of Palestinian bodies handed over by Israel since the ceasefire took effect on October 10 has risen to 285, according to local authorities.

The Gaza Health Ministry previously said that many of the bodies returned by Israel showed signs of abuse, including beatings, bound hands, blindfolds, and facial disfigurement, and were returned without names.

Families have been trying to identify the remains of their relatives by physical markings or clothing, as forensic facilities in Gaza remain out of service due to the Israeli blockade and the destruction of laboratories.

Before the ceasefire, Israel held 735 Palestinian bodies in so-called “cemeteries of numbers,” according to the Palestinian National Campaign to Retrieve Martyrs’ Bodies.

According to the Israeli daily Haaretz, the Israeli army has been holding about 1,500 bodies of Palestinians from Gaza at the notorious Sde Teiman military base in southern Israel.

Phase one of the ceasefire deal includes the exchange of prisoners and bodies between Israel and Hamas. The plan also envisages the rebuilding of Gaza and the establishment of a new governing mechanism without Hamas.

Since October 2023, the Israeli genocide has killed nearly 69,000 people and injured more than 170,600, according to the Gaza Health Ministry.
