Thailand cuts internet and power at border in blow to scam networks in Cambodia
Thailand cut off electricity and internet to starve scam centres along the Cambodian border.
The National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission implemented the crackdown in Trat, eastern Thailand, on Thursday.
Footage shows workers cutting electricity and internet cables along the border with Koh Kong in Cambodia.
Officials said the operation aimed to prevent the illegal use of Thai signals by call centre gangs and cross-border crime networks.
Cherdsak Chumnasiaw, Khlong Yai District Chief, said: Some communication and internet cables in the border area have already been cut off for four months. Today's action is a complete disconnection of all systems to prevent the Thai network from being used to support illegal activities by Cambodian scammers.'
Cambodia has become a hotspot for call centre scam compounds, where thousands of workers, many from Southeast Asia, are coerced into running online fraud operations.
Authorities have been launching crackdowns in border towns to dismantle the criminal networks, which some researchers claim is worth the equivalent of 50 per cent of the country's GDP.
