Philippines: Residents scramble for shelter as Philippines braces for Super Typhoon Fung-wong
Storyline: Residents were scrambling for shelter on Sunday as Super Typhoon Fung-wong barrels into the northern Philippines, with fears mounting over worsening winds and flooding that has already left at least two dead and forced more than a million to evacuate. Frantic scenes unfolded across Santiago City in Isabela Province on Sunday as residents rushed to evacuation centers ahead of the typhoon's landfall. With powerful winds and heavy rain already lashing down, families were in a desperate search for shelter. "We're scared of the typhoon, that’s why we came here. We have many children with us, and we’re afraid the roof of our house could be blown away," said Luisa Merticano, an evacuee. A local school which has been re-purposed into an emergency shelter is housing around 300 residents from nearby settlements. Most classrooms were already full, forcing many families to take refuge in the hallways or open spaces with little protection from the elements. Volunteers say conditions are far from ideal, while many displaced residents were seen fixing up plywood panels or tarpaulin sheets in an effort to shield themselves from the pouring rain. Authorities were working to move more people indoors before the weather worsened overnight. In a nearby gymnasium, hastily erected tents were put it up to host another wave of evacuees, while volunteers and village officials distributed food packs and bottled water. "There are a large number of evacuees seeking shelter from this typhoon. Many of them live near the river, which often overflows during heavy rains. Others come from districts and areas that are frequently hit by flooding, and have decided to move here before the storm intensifies," said Sarah Santos, a village chief. The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration said on Sunday afternoon that the super typhoon was expected to bring life-threatening rainstorms, with waves reaching up to 14 meters in the worst affected coastal areas. About 1.1 million people had been evacuated as of Sunday afternoon, while all schools and government offices on Luzon Island were ordered to close on Monday, as around 400 flights were canceled.
