6. SAFA ABDULLAH JABR, BUREIJ REFUGEE CAMP RESIDENT, SPEAKING (Arabic) TO REPORTER GAZA STRIP, PALESTINE - NOV. 8: Thousands of Palestinians in Gaza are struggling to live in worn-out tents as winter approaches.
Families in the Bureij Refugee Camp reported severe damage to temporary shelters that do not protect them from rain, wind, or cold. Parents said they fear the impact on children as temperatures drop.
Residents said they have waited two years for conditions to improve and that the tents are damaged and unsafe for children.
Palestinian Civil Defense official Sami Abu Sibeyka said, “the tents cannot withstand rain or cold. Our winter preparation is very limited because Gaza’s infrastructure is destroyed.”
He added, “our priority is to protect people from any harm during winter, but we lack water pumps and large tanks. We need urgent support.”
Mahmoud Debbak said, “we waited for the war to end. Now winter is here. The tents are not suitable for human life. They are worn out. We do not want food or water. We need tents. We are afraid of the winter.”
Debbak appealed to aid agencies, saying, “before the war, we lived with dignity. We need a solution to this situation.”
Safa Abdullah Jabr said she has lived in a tent for two years, “we see no action from any country. In summer there are insects, in winter there is heavy rain. These tents are not livable. Our suffering has not ended.”
She described her family’s situation, “I have seven daughters and two sons. One lost a leg and we lost their father. My tent leaks from the ground and the roof. We stay in the water. We ask for help but nothing comes.”
Israel has killed more than 69,000 people, mostly women and children, injured over 170,600 others, and left about 9,500 missing – many believed to be trapped under destroyed homes or still unaccounted for in attacks in Gaza since October 2023.
